What Is IP Geolocation? How It Works and How Accurate It Is
IP geolocation is the practice of associating an IP address with a place—typically a country, and sometimes a region, city, or estimated coordinates—using a database, not a satellite fix from your phone.
IPinfoLabs shows country, region, and city for a looked-up public IP and labels that location approximate. Coordinates appear in Bulk Lookup as database estimates. None of these fields is GPS, a street address, or proof of who is sitting at a keyboard.
Direct answer
IP geolocation estimates the geographic area associated with an IP address block. Country is often more stable than city, but no level is guaranteed. Results can reflect an ISP point of presence, a mobile gateway, a cloud region, or a VPN exit—not your home. They are not a live map pin and they do not identify a person. What “IP geolocation” means
When a lookup tool lists a country or city next to an IP, it is answering: “What location does this data provider currently associate with this address?”
That is different from:
- GPS — a device-reported position from satellites or similar sensors
- Civic address — a street, building, or apartment from postal or subscriber records
- Browser timezone — a local setting on your device (on IPinfoLabs, timezone is from the browser session, not from the IP database)
Mixing those sources is how people overread a dashboard.
How IP geolocation databases work (high level)
Providers build tables that map IP ranges to places. Inputs commonly include registry data, routing measurements, user-submitted corrections, and commercial feeds. Methods vary; there is no single official “internet GPS.”
Practical consequences:
- Two tools can disagree on the same IP
- Entries can be stale after an ISP reassigns a block
- A block used by many customers may be labeled with a hub city, not each customer’s town
Cloudflare documents that IP geolocation is not 100% accurate (Cloudflare: IP geolocation). Treat every field as an estimate.
IPinfoLabs does not operate its own geolocation research lab. Single-IP and bulk results are produced through the site’s lookup path using the external provider ip-api.com. Different providers, or the same provider at a later date, can return different places.
What can commonly be estimated

IPinfoLabs’ main dashboard shows country, region, and city. Bulk Lookup (up to 50 addresses) can include estimated latitude and longitude as well. The main dashboard does not display coordinates.
Country vs region vs city
Think of accuracy as usually decreasing as the place gets smaller:
- Country — most often usable as coarse context (still not guaranteed)
- Region — more detail, more ways to be off
- City — easiest to over-interpret; mobile, rural, VPN, and PoP labeling all bite here
There is no honest universal percentage (“city is 70% accurate”) that applies to every IP, every provider, and every day. If a result would change a high-stakes decision, verify with independent information—not with a second guess from the same class of database.
Why two providers can disagree
Common reasons:
- Different source data and refresh cycles
- Anycast or CDN addressing that is not “where the user sits”
- Corporate or university exits that geolocate to headquarters
- Recent transfers of IP space between networks
- VPNs, proxies, and hosting ranges labeled as the exit’s city
Disagreement is a signal to slow down, not to average the two cities and call it truth.
ISP infrastructure, VPNs, and proxies
IP geolocation describes the address, not the subscriber’s front door.
- Home ISP — the city may be a metro PoP serving a wide area
- Mobile — gateways can be far from the handset
- VPN or proxy — country and city usually describe the exit, which is the point of the tunnel
- Hosting / cloud — location often matches a data-center region
Connecting a VPN and watching the city change on IPinfoLabs confirms that this checker request used a different source address. It does not prove every app is tunneled, and it does not locate a person inside the exit country.
IP geolocation is not GPS
GPS (and similar device location APIs) estimate where the device is. IP geolocation estimates where an address block is associated in a database.
Even when bulk lookup shows coordinates, those numbers are a stored estimate for the block. They should not be dropped on a map as “this human, now.” IPinfoLabs does not provide street-level location, live tracking, or a home address.
How to read IPinfoLabs location fields
- Confirm you are looking at the intended public IP (auto-detected vs manual lookup).
- Read country as approximate network geography.
- Treat region and city as optional extra context—more caution as you go finer.
- Keep browser timezone mentally separate; it is local session data.
- For several addresses, bulk results may add coordinates—still estimates, still not GPS.

Limitations and honest use
IP geolocation is useful for:
- Rough regional context on a connection
- Seeing whether a VPN exit country changed
- Grouping a short list of public IPs by country in bulk lookup
It is not useful for:
- Serving a warrant-style home address
- Tracking a person’s live movements
- Identifying which household member is online
- Proving a crime or an alibi by city name alone
Scare articles that promise “we found their house from an IP” are skipping the extra records that public lookup does not have.
FAQ
Can IP geolocation give my exact street address?
No. Public IP geolocation does not equal civic addressing. Subscriber or billing addresses, where they exist, live in provider records—not in IPinfoLabs results.
Why is my city wrong?
Typical causes include ISP PoP labeling, mobile gateways, VPNs, outdated database rows, and shared or cloud IP space. Country can be wrong too; city is just more often surprising.
Is country always correct?
No. It is often more reliable than city, not infallible. Hosting, VPNs, and misassigned blocks are common exceptions.
Do coordinates in Bulk Lookup mean you tracked a device?
No. They are estimated coordinates associated with the IP block in the lookup data. They are not a live GPS fix.
Which location should I trust if tools disagree?
Do not “trust” a city-level result for high-stakes use. Use country as coarse context, note the disagreement, and look for independent confirmation if the place actually matters.
